Explore 80,000 years of Ice Ages with the Planet Ice Augmented Reality app. See and play with virtual Ice Age animals in the world around you – Woolly Mammoth, Smilodon (sabre-toothed cat), Caribou, Muskox, Wolf, and Short-faced bear. Play with all of these amazing creatures through your device’s camera. There are icy virtual environments and snowy weather systems too! Planet Ice AR is brought to you by the Canadian Museum of Nature.

After working with the Canadian Museum of Nature on the prototype for the Fossil Hunt AR app, Sinking Ship Interactive was asked to pitch on a new AR experience in support of their Planet Ice: Mysteries of the Ice Ages exhibit. The solution was an intuitive experience that allowed tourists and locals to place and interact with an assortment of pre-historic creatures throughout the city of Ottawa (and anywhere around the world!).

The project had an 8-week timeline from initial pitch to the launch of the app. Leveraging an existing set of creative standards for the Planet Ice exhibit, we were able to include (almost) production ready UI assets in the pitch. This ensured quick approvals from all stakeholders and allowed the team to begin prototyping and testing the app well before launch.

UI/UX Solution

Users are able to customize their virtual creature using three categories: Creature, Environment, and Weather. And within each of those are sub-categories (E.g. Weather: Snow, Blizzard, Fog, Aurora Borealis) allowing for 286 unique combinations. Once a scene has been created, the user can reposition and scale the creature, as well as tap on it to trigger animations for each creature.
